Friday, June 12, 2026- A prominent Gazan doctor detained by Israel without formal charges has appeared before the country’s Supreme Court, drawing renewed attention to his prolonged imprisonment and the wider detention of medical personnel from Gaza.
The doctor, Hussam Abu Safiya, appeared via video link during a hearing on his ongoing detention, which has lasted for over 500 days since his arrest in late 2024.
He was taken from a hospital in northern Gaza during Israeli military operations and has since remained in custody under Israel’s “unlawful combatant” framework, which allows detention without trial in certain cases.
During the court appearance, Abu Safiya was described as visibly weakened, and his legal team argued that his condition has significantly deteriorated in detention.
His lawyer is challenging the legality of the continued imprisonment, citing lack of publicly disclosed evidence and raising concerns about his treatment, including reported weight loss, injuries, and restricted medical access.
Rights groups and humanitarian organizations have also called for his release, arguing that he is part of a broader group of detained Gaza healthcare workers held without charges.
The case has intensified scrutiny of Israel’s detention practices amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israeli authorities maintain that detainees are held under legal security provisions and have denied allegations of mistreatment.
However, the hearing has reinforced international debate over the balance between security claims and due process rights, especially concerning medical professionals operating in conflict zones. A final ruling from the Supreme Court is still pending.
