Thursday July 30, 2026- Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee has described the band's lengthy legal dispute with former guitarist Mick Mars as "awful and really hurtful," following the conclusion of a nearly three-year arbitration.
The legal battle stemmed from Mars' departure from touring in 2022 due to his chronic spinal condition, with disagreements over ownership rights, business roles, and financial arrangements dividing the longtime bandmates. A final arbitration ruled in favor of the remaining members, allowing them to remove Mars from the band's business leadership and resolving several financial claims.
Lee acknowledged that the conflict took a personal toll on everyone involved, saying the dispute overshadowed decades of friendship and musical success.
Despite the legal victory, he indicated that the emotional cost was significant, reflecting on how disagreements within a band can become deeply painful when relationships built over decades begin to unravel. The ruling also required Mars to repay part of a tour advance after missing scheduled performances, while the band compensated him for his ownership stake.
With the arbitration now concluded, Mötley Crüe can move forward and focus on future projects after years of uncertainty. Although the legal chapter has closed, the case highlights the complex challenges that can arise when health issues, business agreements, and longstanding personal relationships collide in the music industry.
