Somalia’s fragile government may be on the verge of collapse

Friday, June 12, 2026- Somalia’s already fragile federal government is facing mounting political and security pressures that threaten its stability. Deep divisions between federal leaders and regional states have intensified, while ongoing security challenges continue to test the government’s authority beyond the capital.

Political infighting, delayed reforms, and strained alliances are raising fresh concerns about whether the current administration can maintain cohesion at a critical moment.

Security remains the most immediate pressure point. Militant attacks persist despite ongoing military operations, and questions are growing around the pace and sustainability of security sector reforms.

International partners continue to support stabilization efforts, but donor fatigue and shifting global priorities are adding uncertainty. Without unified political leadership and a consistent security strategy, gains made in recent years risk being reversed.

The stakes could not be higher. A government collapse would not only destabilize Somalia internally but also ripple across the Horn of Africa, affecting trade routes, regional security, and humanitarian operations.

The coming months will demand decisive leadership, compromise among political actors, and renewed focus on institutional resilience. For Somalia, the window to reinforce stability is narrowing and the cost of failure would be profound.
