Kashmiri rights activist wins partial court victory but remains behind bars

Wednesday, June 10, 2026- A prominent Kashmiri human rights activist has secured a partial legal victory in India’s Delhi High Court, after being granted bail in one of two pending cases, but will remain in prison due to a separate ongoing prosecution, according to court proceedings reported on Wednesday.

The activist, Khurram Parvez, who has been detained for nearly five years, was granted bail in a 2021 “terror funding” case, marking a rare judicial relief in a long-running legal battle.

However, authorities are still holding him under a second case filed in 2023, meaning he cannot be released despite the ruling.

The decision has once again drawn attention to India’s use of counterterrorism laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Kashmir, where activists and journalists often face prolonged detention before trial begins.

Supporters of Parvez argue that the continued imprisonment despite bail highlights deeper concerns about due process and extended pre-trial custody, while officials maintain the charges relate to national security.
