Death toll at 4 following celebrations in Mexico City after country’s World Cup victory



Wednesday, June 1, 2026- The death toll has risen to four after massive celebrations erupted across Mexico City following the national team's World Cup victory and qualification for the Round of 16. 

Authorities said the victims died during overcrowded street gatherings near the Angel of Independence monument, where huge crowds of fans gathered to celebrate the historic win. Emergency services responded throughout the night as several others required medical attention.

Officials reported that three of the victims died from asphyxiation caused by the densely packed crowds, while a fourth person later died in hospital after suffering a medical emergency during the celebrations.
