Thursday, June 2, 2026- Venezuela's music community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of all four members of rising nu-metal band Van Der Dijs, who died after the building where they were rehearsing collapsed during the powerful earthquakes that struck the country.
Vocalist Manuel van Der Dijs, guitarist Gabriel Gómez, bassist Xander Hernández, and drummer Abraham Foucault were inside the Costamar II building in La Guaira when the structure gave way. Rescue teams later recovered their bodies from the rubble.
Van Der Dijs had quickly emerged as one of Venezuela's most promising rock acts since forming in 2024. The band had recently performed a sold-out concert in Caracas and was preparing for more live shows following the release of new music.
Their sudden deaths have prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians, fans, and artists across the country, who praised the group's talent and growing influence on Venezuela's alternative music scene.
The tragedy has unfolded against the backdrop of a wider humanitarian disaster, with the earthquakes causing widespread destruction, thousands of deaths, and extensive damage across northern Venezuela.
As rescue and recovery operations continue, the loss of Van Der Dijs has become a powerful symbol of the many lives and dreams cut short by the catastrophe, leaving a lasting impact on both the nation's music community and the country as a whole.
