Tuesday, June 9, 2026- President Donald Trump received a notably hostile reception from the crowd as he attended Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was the first time a sitting U.S. president has attended an NBA Finals game, watching the New York Knicks face the San Antonio Spurs.
When Trump’s image appeared on the arena’s jumbo screens during the national anthem, loud booing and jeers broke out from fans inside the packed arena as well as at nearby gatherings.
The reaction highlighted the political divisions in the U.S., especially in a city that voted overwhelmingly against Trump in the 2024 election and traditionally leans toward more liberal politics. The boos initially drowned out parts of the anthem, only subsiding once the Knicks players were shown.
Trump, seated in an elevated suite alongside family, his granddaughter Kai Trump, and Knicks owner James Dolan, smiled and saluted during the crowd’s response. He later described the atmosphere as “loud and enthusiastic,” insisting he heard “mostly cheers,” a claim widely disputed by on-site reports and videos showing sustained booing.
The president’s appearance required extensive security measures around the arena, including street closures and strict screening, which disrupted usual fan festivities and led to the cancellation of planned outdoor watch parties.
The Knicks ultimately lost the game 115-111, narrowing their series lead. Trump’s visit, occurring amid economic pressures and ongoing tensions both domestically and internationally, became a focal point for public frustration, with many fans making their displeasure with his presence clear throughout the night.
