South Africa to raise health funding cuts at UN meeting

Monday, June 22, 2026- South Africa is expected to bring growing concerns over global health funding cuts to an upcoming United Nations discussion, warning that reduced financing could undermine healthcare systems in vulnerable regions.

Officials say the issue has become increasingly urgent as international aid shifts and several donor countries scale back contributions to health programs focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and maternal care.

The concern comes at a time when many low- and middle-income countries are still recovering from pandemic-era strain on their health infrastructure.

South African representatives are expected to argue that funding gaps could reverse progress made over the past decade, particularly in combating infectious diseases and strengthening primary healthcare delivery. The discussion is likely to highlight the risk of widening inequality in global health outcomes if support continues to decline.

At the UN meeting, South Africa is anticipated to call for renewed commitments from international partners and more predictable financing mechanisms to stabilize long-term health programs.

The move reflects broader pressure from developing nations seeking stronger global coordination on healthcare funding. As negotiations unfold, the outcome could influence future donor strategies and reshape priorities in global health governance.
